Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a restful and memorable holiday. I enjoyed much play time with my babies. I am looking forward to the second half of the year with your child! We have a lot to accomplish together, so I hope we all have a renewed energy.
As I reflect upon the new year, I would like to have an increased emphasis on real, authentic reading. Thus, we are “Reading in the New Year”. My hope is that your child will have more opportunities to love reading in class, as well as at home. I have planned some reading events to encourage more reading during the school day, so our daily schedule may be tweaked some. This Friday we are having a Reading Marathon to get our minds back in shape. Your child needs to be prepared with a fiction, chapter book on Friday. Students may also wear pajamas and bring a blanket for this event. Please encourage your child to read at least 100 minutes a week outside of in class reading. There is evidence that proves more reading increases success. Starting the week of January 11, your child will be expected to post on a Padlet that will be linked on our class Weebly- http://ashleywalker4th.weebly.com/ . This will be in place of the weekly reading log. (Spelling and math homework will be sent home as usual.) Each week there will be a different question posted. Your child may respond anytime during the week, but must post by 9:00 pm each Sunday. Your child can post if he has access to a computer at home or during the school day. Happy Reading!

We have been very busy so far! Students' favorite activity has been the spaghetti tower challenge. Teams worked to build the tallest tower possible using only spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. The tallest tower was 52cm.
In math we are learning how arrays help us multiply and about special prime and composite numbers. In reading students are learning to be real readers during read to self time. They have enjoyed read alouds, Ish and You Are Special. We are finishing reading Fourth Grade Rats. I hope to meet you and your families soon. Our Meet and Greet is Thursday, August 20, from 4:30-5:30 in our classroom. You will be able to find your new home away from home and reconnect with friends. A hot dog supper, along with games will be held.
I hope you and your families can come back to school the evening of Thursday, September 3 for our official Open House. During that time we will discuss expectations for the year. |
